John Downer’s | Intro to Sign Painting

As soon I found out about this past weekend’s workshop I put myself on the waiting list (I was the first actually haha). Having John Downer give you a Sign painting workshop is one of those rare opportunities that don’t come very often and you NEED to take like there’s no tomorrow.

I got to the classroom and there was John, coming out from a cold but with a big smile, as usual, with his awesome white overalls and ready to roll. He wrote on the blackboard one list for each day (Saturday & Sunday) and then explained that he would cover a four day apprenticeship in two-days (so hold tight Folks!).

He started by sharing with us all his setting up tricks from scribing lines to mixing ink to the right consistency. On Saturday, we covered two of the single stroke styles in American Sign Paiting: Show Card Style and Sign Painter Style. On Sunday, he taught us how to make Built-up Letters and we made our own sign! So muchhhhh work, and the lesson as always practice, practice practice and when you’re done practice some more. Here are some pictures of the workshop:

We had to create a poster for the class to end the workshop using the styles we learnt. (I definitely need more practice). Thanks again to John Downer for all his hard work and patience, Cara di Edwardo for organizing and C.J Dunn for TAing
